The uniquely-sloping brick building located on the northeast corner of Rosser Avenue and 4th Street is likely to soon be demolished. In its place will be a 3-story office building, if its pending canal Gold sale goes through as expected.
Dakota Theater (later renamed Dakota Twin) had opened at the location in October 1951 as a single-screen, auditorium-style Movie Theater seating nearly 900 moviegoers. It later converted into dual screens in 1975 to compete against sprouting multiplexes across the region.
The theater ultimately closed in 1994 and has housed numerous businesses since, most recently Simply Salads.
The Bismarck Tribune recently did an interesting story about its redevelopment plans that also included some interesting facts about some of the region’s former movie theaters, including Dakota Theater. Read it here.
As a strong opponent of the involuntary smoking ban, I applaud the efforts taken by this group to put this issue to a public vote. Such a highly controversial issue that affects this many people on both sides should always go to a public vote, in my opinion.
No matter what the outcome, at least those on both sides of this issue can be given a chance to truly have their voices heard.
